Thinking About Starting a Podcast?
Thinking About Starting a Podcast?
Before you hit record, let's talk about what goes into building a podcast that works for you and your business.
First Things First: Let's Talk Strategy.
-
You don't need an entire year's worth of content mapped out, but having a handful of strong topics is a good indication that your podcast has room to grow. Think about the questions clients regularly ask you, industry conversations you're passionate about, and topics you could discuss for 20 to 30 minutes.
-
Get specific. Are you speaking to potential clients, industry peers, existing customers, or a completely new audience? Knowing who you're talking to will shape everything from your episode topics to your tone of voice.
-
Are you looking to build credibility, generate marketing content, educate potential clients, or develop relationships with guests? Your goals will help determine what success looks like.
-
You don't have to reinvent the wheel. But consider what makes your perspective unique. Could you have a recurring segment, a signature question, a specific guest format, or a unique way of approaching your industry?
-
Weekly, biweekly, or monthly? Consistency is more important than volume. Think about your current responsibilities and choose a publishing schedule that feels sustainable.
-
A podcast doesn't need thousands of listeners to be valuable. For a professional service provider, reaching 25 highly relevant people might be more meaningful than reaching hundreds of people outside your target audience.
One Conversation. So Many Possibilities.
Here's something I encourage every business owner to consider: your podcast doesn't have to exist solely as a podcast.
A single conversation can become the foundation for multiple pieces of marketing content, allowing you to share your expertise across different platforms without constantly creating something from scratch.
Video Content
YouTube episodes, Reels, Shorts, and video highlights.
Written Content
Blog posts, newsletters, and educational articles.
Audio Content
Full-length episodes and short audio highlights.
Social Content
Quotes, industry insights, and thought leadership posts.
Let's Talk Tools.
You don't need a professional recording studio or thousands of dollars in equipment to start a podcast.
But you do need a few reliable tools and a basic understanding of how everything connects.
Start With Your Audio
If there's one thing I recommend prioritizing, it's audio quality. A reliable microphone and a quiet recording environment can make a big difference in your listener's experience.
The Platforms You'll Need
As you begin your podcasting journey, you'll need a few tools and platforms to bring everything together. Below are some of the programs I've personally used and recommend, but there are plenty of other great options out there. The key is finding what works best for you and your workflow.
